The next best thing to being in Berlin - For students just beginning to study German, who are curious as to the difference between German dialects, there is no better way to start their studies than listening to the divine Katja Ebstein singing in Berliner dialect. Muss Mal Wieder Berlin Sehen is a wonderful tribute to Berlin and Berliners that covers both the good and bad of living in Berlin throughout the years. This is not really a pop ablum. In some ways, its more like Katja s renditions of Heinrich Heine s poems and has a real broadway musical feel to it. There is only one real pop song on it, Ich bin ein Berliner Kind. The rest of the album is more like listening to Brecht s Three Penny Opera. So, be warned, the album is not an easy listen...but if you are a German speaker who loves hearing that unique Berliner accent, you will cherish this album. If you are a beginning German speaker and are curious as to the difference between Berliner Deutsch and Haupt Deutsch, listen to track nine first. Ick liebe dir (track nine)is pure Berliner. Then listen to track 11 (Ich bin ein Berliner Kind.) Track 11 is more Haupt Deutsch, like people speak in Hessen (considered to be the most gramatically correct German by many experts.) Once you can begin to detect the difference, you will be able to understand the rest of the album, which is in a marvelously thick Berliner accent. Then you can astonish your German teacher by speaking like a Berliner. (Katja Ebstein pretty much grew up in Berlin, studying archaeology and romantic literature there. So, her Berliner accent is wonderful...as is her Haupt Deutsch.)
